That 1 Most Memorable Trip
(Mine walked slowly through Landour)
Some trips happen on Google Maps.
Some happen on Instagram.
And then there are many memorable trips that happen inside you, quietly, without asking permission.
For me, there is only memorable trip and that was Landour.
Not flashy.
Not rushed.
Not loud.
Just… right.
🌄 Lal Tibba: Where Silence Gets a View
Lal Tibba doesn’t announce itself.
It waits.
You stand there, wrapped in cold air and half-formed thoughts, and suddenly realise:
The mountains aren’t trying to impress you.
They’re just existing.
And somehow, that makes you feel allowed to exist too.
⛪ Churches That Don’t Preach
At St. Paul’s Church and Kellog Memorial Church, there’s no sermon screaming for attention.
Just old walls.
Wooden pews.
Time sitting quietly in the corners.
You don’t go there to pray.
You go there to slow down respectfully.
🥐 Char Dukan & Landour Bakehouse: Calories With Character
Char Dukan is where hunger meets patience.
Food takes time.
People take time.
Nobody rushes you out.
Then there’s Landour Bakehouse — warm, comforting, unapologetically indulgent.
You eat slowly.
Not because you’re mindful.
Because the place demands it.
🔁 Gol Chakkar: Walking Without a Deadline
The Gol Chakkar might be my favourite metaphor for life.
You walk.
You loop.
You don’t arrive anywhere special.
And that’s the lesson.
In a world obsessed with outcomes, Gol Chakkar gently whispers:
“It’s okay to just keep moving.”
🌳 Company Garden & Sister’s Bazaar: Soft Chaos
Company Garden gives you greenery without pressure.
No checklist.
No urgency.
Then Sister’s Bazaar adds a bit of life — small shops, familiar faces, nothing trying too hard.
Just enough noise to remind you that life is happening, but it’s not chasing you.
🕊️ Shedup Cho & Dalai Hills: Calm Without Commentary
At Shedup Choephelling Temple and Dalai Hills, calm doesn’t come with instructions.
No motivational boards.
No enlightenment slogans.
Just space.
And silence that feels earned, not enforced.
☕ Café De Landour & Rokeby Manor: Sitting With Time
At Cafe De Landour, you sip coffee the way it’s meant to be sipped — slowly, looking outside more than inside yourself.
And Rokeby Manor feels less like a hotel and more like a house that remembers stories.
The walls don’t rush you.
The windows don’t distract you.
Everything politely waits.
🐭 Tom & Jerry Were There Too (Obviously)
My mind was Tom — planning, worrying, calculating.
Landour was Jerry.
Every time Tom tried to hurry, Jerry distracted him with:
- Another walk
- Another view
- Another cup of coffee
- Another quiet moment
Jerry won.
As usual.
🎬 Why This Trip Stayed With Me
I’ve travelled after Landour.
I’ve seen louder places.
But Landour didn’t give me excitement.
It gave me permission.
Permission to slow down.
Permission to walk without purpose.
Permission to sit without guilt.
Making it that 1 memorable trip.
🌱 Final Thought
Some memorable trips are not memorable because they don’t become memories.
They become reference points.
Landour is mine.
Whenever life speeds up too much,
my mind quietly walks back to Gol Chakkar,
holds a warm cup of coffee,
and breathes.
Yours in foggy walks and unhurried mornings, memorable trips,
