Christmas: A Festival of Glitter, Feasts, and Midnight Magic

Christmas : Not just a festival, it’s a vibe

But let’s be honest, it means different things to different people.

1. What is Christmas for Me?

For me, Christmas is:

  • Preparing the crib with care, trying to keep it safe from curious pets.
  • Decorating the Christmas tree, fighting with tangled fairy lights, and somehow always ending up with glitter in my hair.
  • Midnight mass, where faith meets festivity.
  • And finally, wine time—because nothing pairs better with a quiet moment than a glass of something sweet and celebratory.

2. Christmas for Mumbaikars: A Festival with Traffic and Glitter

In Mumbai, Christmas begins with:

  • Artificial trees from Crawford Market, decorated with baubles that miraculously appear in every room (and sometimes on the cat or dog, in my case – sometimes the bedroom or the loo).
  • Midnight mass, where the hymns are melodious, but the real struggle is finding parking near the Church.
  • Cake wars: If you stay in Bandra, then your final KBC question is – Which cake wins? Plum cake or Rum cake? Or our homemade special recipe for the mysterious cake?

And, of course, the wine. Sweet, fruity, and probably brewed in someone’s Bandra kitchen. Cheers to that!

3. Christmas for Indians: Biryani Meets Plum Cake

Across India, Christmas is a perfect mashup of global traditions and local flavors:

  • Christmas trees share space with rangolis.
  • The nativity crib is the centrepiece, often guarded by a random street dog who refuses to leave baby Jesus.
  • Feasts range from Goan sorpotel to Keralite appam, with biryani taking the crown for “Best Supporting Dish.”
  • And let’s not forget the carol singers, who show up to your door and somehow sing their way into your dining room for snacks.

4. Christmas for the World: A Universal Festival of Joy

Globally, Christmas is:

  • Snowy dreams in New York, with hot chocolate and carollers in Central Park.
  • Beach parties in Australia, because Santa surfs there.
  • Markets and mulled wine in Europe, where the air smells of cinnamon and roasted chestnuts.
  • And let’s not forget the global obsession with ugly Christmas sweaters. (Why is this even a thing?)

Moral of the Story:

Christmas is universal in its joy, yet wonderfully personal in its traditions. Whether it’s glittery chaos in Mumbai, biryani feasts across India, or snowy magic abroad, it’s all about togetherness, laughter, and a little indulgence.

Your Turn: What does Christmas mean to you? Share your stories, your chaos, and your traditions—because Christmas is best celebrated with a little sharing (and a lot of plum cake).

Yours in glitter explosions, crib-building, and wine toasts,
Lucifer Morningstar
